Charity Shield 2008

Manchester United v Portsmouth

With less than two weeks to go until the start of the football season in England the annual traditional curtain raiser ‘The Charity Shield’ takes place this Sunday at the all new Wembley with last season’s Premiership winners Manchester United locking horns with the FA Cup winners Portsmouth.
The game itself should be very entertaining with two very attack minded teams going at each other, with Ronaldo’s injured ankle keeping him out of the Man-Utd side this game could be a lot closer than most people are suggesting.

Portsmouth’s new strike force of Crouch and Defoe is on paper one of the best forward lines in the Premiership, Crouch who during the summer joined Portsmouth from Liverpool was manager Redknapp’s top target and when you consider the potential of his new Little and large strike force it really must be a good time to support the south coast club and with them both likely to figure on Sunday you can be sure they will give the defenders of Man-Utd something to think about.

Prediction
As I have already said I expect this to be a very tight affair and just because you are allowed to make more than the normal amount of subs in this game I expect Man-Utd’s strength in depth to tell in the end and with this I think they will just nick it by the odd goal 1-0,2-1.

Despite being on of the best bookmakers on the high street the on-line world of betting seems to be an element that www.willhill.co.uk hasn’t full grasped.

The home page is just not what you expect from a betting firm with you actually having to search to find a market and even then the site is not quite up to the standard of its rivals. That said Hills still offer a good variety of betting opportunities and above all else they are a name you can trust and any punter should have an account with them.

It’s very easy to get started with a fast three-step registration process. From the home page it is clear how to sign up, although not sign-posted with a flashing graphic the small ‘open a betting account’ link is easy enough to spot. Once selected you are taken through to a familiar looking personal details page including the usual name, date of birth etc. The next page step is your address, which is very quick thanks to a post code finder and lastly its time to sort out details such as passwords and deposits.

One of the good things about Hills is that you don’t have to deposit to explore the site as a new member – it almost makes up for the paltry £25 free match bet they give you that seriously lags behind the other firms. If you do choose to deposit though there is a wide range of options including the very nice touch of Paypal.

Weekly Football Report

There were no real surprises on the opening day of the premiership season with Chelsea laying down a marker to their title rivals.

New blues boss Luis Filipe Scolari is under pressure to deliver this season after the West Londoners ended the last campaign without a trophy. Surprisingly the billionaires have been relatively quiet in the transfer market over the summer but the pair they have brought in looked just what they need to push on as the Stamford Bridge outfit destroyed Portsmouth four-nil.

Deco looks to be the perfect fit in a Chelsea midfield desperate for flair and cutting edge and his man of the match performance showed any fears he wouldn’t suit the English game are probably unfounded. The other new boy Jose Bosingwa has finally given the blues some penetration and pace down the right flank meaning the blues are now a threat on both wings. More performances like the one on Sunday and Chelsea will be very hard to stop.

Manchester United, meanwhile, got off to their usual slow start. A one-all draw with Newcastle is disappointing but they are one goal better off than this stage last season. Injuries, the Olympics and a family bereavement left the squad threadbare and any Chelsea fan thinking there will be no red treat this season is sorely mistaken.

Arsenal and Liverpool, both one-nil winners, showed enough to suggest they will be in the top four again but in all likely-hood not challenging for the title.

Ladbroke sports book – Boxing

Boxing enthusiasts having been almost begging for Amir Khan to be squared up against a fighter that will actually test him and they may get their wish when Breidis Prescott roles into town next month.

Khan has been impressive so far in his burgeoning career but has he actually been tested?

The Bolton boxer’s last opponent, Michael Gomez, was probably meant to be his biggest test but the unpredictable 31-year-old was well past his prime and in the end the hungrier Khan was in a different league. Those who defend Amir’s record will point to his fight with Aussie Gairy St. Clair, which went 12 rounds, but he was placed in ring to test the young pretender’s stamina without really threatening to win.

Things could be different though with the next challenger. Breidis Prescott has all the attributes to really stretch the British boxer having so far been educated in tough fights mostly in his native Columbia. The question of the strength of Khan’s chin will be answered with the 25-year-old recording 17 of his 19 wins by knockout. Like the Olympic silver medalist of four years ago he is undefeated and perhaps hasn’t really been stretched.

There is no doubt he can punch and is a talented fighter but in his last bout, when he stepped up a level, he only managed a split points decision victory. That said it was the first fight he’d faced outside South America and he should be able to use the experience to improve his talents.
