It was a big shock to everybody that watched the 2009 Grand National on PaddyPower.co.uk to see a 100/1 shot make it past the finishing line first! I expect that it was an extremely happy shock for anyone who had a bet on Mon Mome but what do you really know about the year’s most prestigious horse racing event?

The race is held in Aintree, Merseyside every year. The distance of the race is approximately 4 miles 856 yards long with a staggering 30 fences to battle with before reaching the finishing line!
The most famous Grand National horse was Red Rum. He won this title three times and no other horse has ever beaten that. His first victory was in 1973 and he won the title again the following year however managed to also win four other races in between! 1977 saw his third Grand National victory but that was to be his last Grand National win as the morning of the 1978 race, he had to pull out due to a hairline fracture. Red Rum died in 1995 but is always remembered as the greatest horse of the Grand National.
The 1997 Grand National had to be postponed due to bomb threats and with the risk to tens of thousands of people, had to take place on the following Monday.
From 2000 to 2008, the highest odds for the winning horse came in 2001 and 2007 with 33/1 shots on Red Marauder and Silver Birch. That was until 2009 when Mon Mome battled against the odds to take the title. Such excitement has also been seen in football odds this week on PaddyPower.co.uk.
