Luton Town F.C. started so well, being the first football club to turn professional in the south of England. No doubt their most memorable playing years were in the 1980’s where in 1981/82, Luton Town won promotion into what was then the First Division. 1988 saw the club win the League Cup against Arsenal in a thrilling 3-2 victory. Top flight remained for the club until the 1991/92 season when it all started to deteriorate.
2001 saw the departure of some of their good players for example, Matthew Upson however it did see the arrival of Joe Kinnear who led the team to promotion that same season! Kinnear’s stay was short lived though and the appointment of arguably one of their best managers came in 2005. Mike Newell found success with the club and took them back to the Football League Championship in 2005. Again, this didn’t last long and another new manager took over and was later sacked as Luton Town were relegated again. The 2008/09 season started badly as Luton were docked a staggering 30 points for administration and financial issues. It was an uphill struggle from here on in and it proved too much of a battle where Luton found themselves relegated down to conference level football.
