New blues boss Luis Filipe Scolari is under pressure to deliver this season after the West Londoners ended the last campaign without a trophy. Surprisingly the billionaires have been relatively quiet in the transfer market over the summer but the pair they have brought in looked just what they need to push on as the Stamford Bridge outfit destroyed Portsmouth four-nil.
Deco looks to be the perfect fit in a Chelsea midfield desperate for flair and cutting edge and his man of the match performance showed any fears he wouldn’t suit the English game are probably unfounded. The other new boy Jose Bosingwa has finally given the blues some penetration and pace down the right flank meaning the blues are now a threat on both wings. More performances like the one on Sunday and Chelsea will be very hard to stop.
Manchester United, meanwhile, got off to their usual slow start. A one-all draw with Newcastle is disappointing but they are one goal better off than this stage last season. Injuries, the Olympics and a family bereavement left the squad threadbare and any Chelsea fan thinking there will be no red treat this season is sorely mistaken.
Arsenal and Liverpool, both one-nil winners, showed enough to suggest they will be in the top four again but in all likely-hood not challenging for the title.
